UK based indie/unsigned music. Good Music Is Infinite.
Good Music Is Infinite
An Ourobouros is an ancient Greek symbol of a snake biting its own tail that symbolises infinity. The idea is that there is infinite good music out there that people should hear and I intend to play some of that music.
If anyone is interested in downloading the music I made a few years ago then click on this link:
This is basically an announcement podcast about the changes that are coming to this show.
It will continue with my traditional 'Best Track' and 'Best Video' podcasts in the 1st week in January. However those shows will not be in this feed. The new podcasts will be released at feeds.feedburner.com/ourobouros.
Also in this show I briefly talk about the PodCrawl yesterday and the reasons I'm leaving AMP.
This was only going to be a verbal announcement podcast, but one of the tracks that very nearly made the cut as one of my 10 tracks of the year seemed very appropriate to play in this show.
It occured to me that I didn't fully explain why I don't play the same track multiple times. My philosophy has always been that there are many bands out there that deserve exposure. If I play the same track multiple times then that's taking a slot on the show that could be taken by a fresh new band. That's not to say I don't play the same band multiple times, just not the same track. If you hear it once that should be enough. If you like it you can always rewind and listen to it again. Another great facet of podcasting.
Another call for more bumpers for Weird Track of the Week. I'd still like more efforts in my archive and your imagination deserves to be heard on the show.
Truly pitiful amount of videos this week. Not even some live performances. The video I do have is pretty good to make up for it.
On Weekly Music Video Podcast this week an animated video that was made using a free program. Very imaginative and a very interesting style. Check it out on Friday.
As was plugged in this episode, and in various forms for the last few months, please go and have a look at The Legion Of Tangent. A syndicate of 6 geek-centric podcasts that are all highly entertaining. There's talk that more shows will soon be entering the fold as well. Here's the promo I recorded for the syndicate.
It's occured to me that there is another genre of music I'm prejudiced against that has so far escaped inclusion onto this podcast. Reggae. I just don't get it. I'm probably the wrong generation (Marley was a huge deal before I was even born), but it just all sounds the same, derivative and dull. This is not to say that I will never include some reggae on the podcast, just that it seems unlikely.
As ever another call for my listeners to provide some Weird Track of the Week bumpers. I'd still like more and I know I have some creative listeners.
Not a great deal on the video front this week. The Blue Seeds vid is creepy and weird, but the rest is mostly live performances.
Another telling factor about the gender divide in Sci-Fi is the fact that recently the American Sci-Fi channel changed it's name to SyFy. As is always the case, a company that rebrands makes it's customers unhappy. The company has said that it wanted to distance itself from Sci-Fi because it no longer only had science fiction content on the network. A coded phrase that says 'We want more women viewers'. Fortunately the UK Sci-Fi channel has not made the change, and I hope it doesn't. At least here we still have 100% Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror content on the channel.
As usually happens when I talk without a script I missed the major point of my latest discussion on religion. The two main things that I hate about Evangelical Christianity are the objections to Gay Rights and Evolution. It makes me furious that people are using their faith to deny the human dignity of a large group of people and deny a genuine scientific fact that has stood up to the rigours of a century and a half of investigation. As I said on the show you are perfectly entitled to hold your own beliefs, but when you start being successful in getting those beliefs passed into law there is something critically wrong. It is this fury that is the main reason fro my vitriol against religion.
It genuinely was a coincidence that I played 'The Unbeliever' after my latest religious rant. I set the playlist running order days before hand and then try and find things to talk about between the tracks. It just so happened that the thing I hasd to talk about before MDR was Dave's comment.
Not too long until the PodCrawl and my promised hug from Caroline Lee. If you want to join in then check out the itinerary on the website and search out the Facebook Event.
I also still want new bumpers for the Weird Track of the Week. If you are willing to risk the curse of most of my contributors podfading then send along an mp3 with your imaginative work.
For the first time in a long time we have a really special video this week. The Middle Distance Runner vid is fantastic and ends in a completely different place from where it started.
On Friday we have another episode of Weekly Music Video Podcast that answers the question 'What's the most interesting thing you can do in a swimming pool?'
See you next week where there will probably be more ranting.
There was a delay in releasing this weeks WMVP due to some hosting room issues. I should have enough space on my hosting to release the interesting video with the girls in underwear on Monday.
I've been doing this for nearly 3 years and this is only the 3rd time I've played some feedback in a 'regular' show. Thanks to Brandi & Dave of The InsideOutcast for providing it. If you really want to be part of the show I'm still looking for Weird Track of the Week bumpers to add to the rotation. I've got 4 at the moment, but I'd love a few more.
Just in case anyone still hasn't seen it here's the fantastic video for 'Vitriol' by Bluejuice. Seriously one of my favourite tracks and videos of all time. It really was awesome when Stav from the band e-mailed me this week.
I've actually managed to avoid playing Puzzle Quest today. It won't last... The Sci-Fi themed sequel is only £7.50 on Amazon. More addiction beckons. I do love The Totally Rad Show, but my current obsession is entirely their fault.
Not a great selection of videos this week, but the Lusine vid is a really nice piece of work.
On WMVP this week a video that features prominently girls wearing underwear, boots and military helmets. It's not as perverted as it sounds. Check it out on Friday.
Strange list of discussion topics this week. On the one hand I can't see how anyone (except me) would be interested in all of them. On the other there should be something that you're interested in.
Please don't think that I am insulting my fellow podcasters with my theories about psychology. I just think it's an interesting question and one that I include myself in.
A kind of sports special this week since I didn't have much to talk about.
Here's an article describing in more coherent detail the tale of the moronic James Martin. Cycling and cyclists in Britain have absolutely no respect.
I've now discovered that my beloved Everton are facing Blackburn Rovers tomorrow. Ordinarily it would be a game that Everton were marginal favourites for, but on current form it could go either way.
On WMVP this week a parody song that has a fruit slasher film for a video. One of the most interesting sentences I've written on this blog. You can catch it on it's new release date of Friday.
A few quick updates that have come up in the hours since I recorded this show.
I spoke too soon about the crashes in the Vuelta a Espana. After I recorded the show I watched the footage from Wednesday's stage into Liege in Belgium. There was this MASSIVE crash and American Chris Horner has had to go home with a fractured pelvis and left hand. In all my years of watching cycling I can only think of one other crash on such a scale. Professional cycling is not for the timid.
The handheld mouse I ordered from China has finally arrived... and it's left handed. No big deal but slightly irritating.
For anyone wanting to follow up on my rant about movie studios listen to Episode 63 of the /Filmcast featuring Director of Fanboys Kyle Newman. The full discussion of the trauma that Newman had to go through is on the 'After Dark' of Episode 63. It makes for some very sobering listening.
Not much on the video front with only one 'proper' video. Having said that it's a great, trippy video that fits the Drool Brothers' song perfectly. The Tigersapien. video is also so well shot it could almost be a produced video.
I faithfully promise that I will try to wrench myself away from Pro Cycling Manager long enough to record a new batch of Weekly Music Video Podcast. in any case you can go to the site and watch the archive. You can also stream them all from Vimeo.
See you next week and remember to tell me if the poorer audio quality is too distracting.
A late release this week, but hopefully the last for a very long time.
The new laptop is purchased and this is the first show recording with it, but teething troubles combined with a dodgy internet connection on the desktop has delayed the release. It turned out one of the dogs had peed on a phone connector and thankfully the internet is back to being reliable.
Speaking of the dogs, I forgot to mention on the show that the puppies celebrated their first birthday this past Tuesday. Yet 2 of them are still too wobbly to get up on the sofa by themselves...
Pleeeease watch the excellent web show First Things First TV hosted by the lovely and multi-talented Heather Stewart. Anyone on twitter should also follow @penciljesus. (I'm @ourobouros54 BTW)
Apparently some of my audio will be showing up on the next episode of Rant & Dick's Saturday Night Piss Takeaway. Very crude but very funny. It's certainly not for everyone, but go along, have a listen and see what you think.
Quite a full list of videos this week, including an excellent one for The Protist that will be showing up on a future episode of WMVP. The A-B Theory video is a live performance of the song that also features a second track that's equally as good.
Still getting glitching on the audio. Curses! Yet another reason I need a laptop. The Donate button on the right is going to remain active for the next few weeks. Please help out if you can.
In the category of odd coincidences, Anton Peterlin, the young American Everton player I was talking about on the show, went to college at Cal Poly-SLO. The home of my good friends at the Hyper Nonsense podcast.
Please check out the very cool InsideOutcast. They really are the cool kids across the pond. In another case of making contact at one remove, I'm pretty sure I'e just been followed on Twitter by Brandi's sister...
Not much on the video front this week. Only a live video, an odd fan-made effort and one absolutely genius piece of work.
So yes folks, I'm asking you for money. If you can donate to my laptop fund please click the button on the right to donate through PayPal. I've now found a new button that donates in £ not $.
On top of everything else the audio glitching is back this week. Curses! Possibly another reason I need a laptop.
For people outside the UK here is a representative sample of the shit Phones4U adverts. This is the reason I didn't go there when investigating mobile internet dongles.
The My First Earthquake video is a really nice tongue-in-cheek piece of work with the subtitle 'Invasion of the Hipster Bodysnatchers'. Pretty much how I feel about the latest fashion fad.
I've come to the conclusion that I am in need of a laptop for the future health of my shows. Buying one off ebay has proved a failure and I have made the hard decision to ask my loyal listeners to donate a small amount to help me purchase a brand new laptop.
In the 2 1/2 years I have been producing podcasts I have never asked my listeners for money, and never really wanted to, but for this specific problem I have made the decision to ask that each of my listeners dip into their pockets and make a small difference. If each of my loyal listeners make a £5-10 donation I can quickly get the new equipment and ensure many more years of podcasting.
If you can please use the button on the right. Thanks for your time and patience.
Hurrah! No audio glitches this week. Maybe I've finally solved my recording problems. Fingers crossed.
This is rapidly turning into the worlds only music/rant/cycling podcast. Normal service will be resumed next week since there's no major cycling races this week and barring more doping announcements I'll be laying of the peleton for a while.
Not much on the video front this week. A very literalist video from Art Noir, which seems to have been shot in a botanical garden, A well shot performance video from Ume and a couple of live videos.
I still haven't sorted out the glitching in the audio. It's starting to annoy me, as I'm sure it's annoying you. At least when you can hear my links they sound better now.
I am really impressed with Florence + The Machine. It's a rare case in recent years that who I want to win the Mercury Music Prize is probably actually going to win it. If you haven't come across her wonderfully dark and elegant music yet then check out the video for her last single.
Here's The Onion'sStar Trek video that I talked about in the show. Substitute Dr. Who for Star Trek and it's almost how I feel.
I recommend everybody watch First Things First TV, the topical news web series hosted by the lovely and talented Heather Stewart. On top of this excellent show she's also a singer who has given me permission to play one of her tracks on a future episode.
Pretty good video selection this week and almost a full representation. It's no surprise that the videos are good this week, as two of this week's tracks I found on the blog of $99 Music Videos.
On WMVP this week the second in my series of performance videos. If you like the sound of Swedes being dressed in a car park then chack it out on Wednesday.
See you next week for lots more music and probably less cycling.
With so much else to talk about I forgot to update you on my employment status. As of yet I have not heard from SFX Magazine. It's been 10 days since the job closed and I'm taking it as a good sign that I have not been rejected yet. Fingers crossed.
To clarify my thoughts about the Tour de France. You expect the first week to be flat, sprinters stages that don't actually affect the final result of the race. By the second week you expect a contenders group to have formed at the top of the rankings and for them to attack each other and try to gain time. In this years race the contenders group is at the top of the rankings, but they are just not trying to gain time on each other. I fear that the organizers were trying to make the final week interesting and hard, and in doing so they've made it TOO hard. Everybody is planning on one huge attack on Mont Ventoux and not doing anything until then.
I experimented this week with a new post-production filter. Let me know if there's any noticeable difference. I'm still getting glitches in the audio though. I really thought I'd solved it and I'm not sure what else to do. Oh Well.
Following up on a story from last week. The Nashville police have announced that 36 year old Steve McNair was shot to death by his 20 year old girlfriend who then shot herself. McNair was married at the time of his death. It's a real shame that a man who pioneered black quarterbacks in the NFL and was part of the most memorable drive in Superbowl history will forever be tainted by his personal life.
An outstanding selection of videos this week. You can expect to see most of these in future episodes of Weekly Music Video Podcast. The Lowry video was one of the ones made by the excellent $99 Music Videos podcast. You can also check out the excellent 'Making Of'.
On WMVP this week there's an excellent animated video that takes it's inspiration from Michel Gondry, or if it doesn't it independently came up with the same brilliant concept that Gondry has.
Off now to watch the Tour de France. See you next week for more great music.
It's been a really hard recording process this week, so this video link blog is really late. Sorry if anyone was waiting for it.
In a way it was cool that I had to delay recording and release of this show because I can comment on the first two stages of the Tour de France. Since Fabian Cancellara is the best Time-Trialist in the world and Mark Cavendish is the best sprinter, it is hardly surprising that they won the first two stages. I'm writing this before the finish of stage three, but I fully expect Cavendish to win again. I really can't wait until Mont Ventoux on the penultimate stage.
Completely shocked by the death of Steve McNair. At this early stage it looks like he was shot by his girlfriend who then shot herself. Of course this story could well change as more details emerge. In many ways McNair was a pioneer of race relations in the NFL. While there had been successful black quarterbacks before McNair, after he arrived on the scene it was no longer an issue if a quarterback was black. He will be sadly missed.
Only one 'proper' video this week, but it's a really nice piece of work that fits the song perfectly.
Short blog this week as I spent so long recording I'm now exhausted.
Yet again I seem to have got unexpectedly angry in this episode so it's another long one. I really need to curb myself sometimes. For the first time ever I actually edited down my links.
Whoa! I really didn't see such a long episode coming. I didn't think I had that much to say. Sorry about that.
One reason for the length is my unexpected detour into the weirdos in the English Democrats. Have a look at this YouTube video which features an interview with the newly elected Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies and Toby Foster from the BBC Radio Sheffield morning programme. A brilliant example of an ambush interview.
Also thanks to Caroline for unwittingly providing the title for this weeks show. She's the wife of Dave, host of The Bugcast.
If you're unaware of the genius that is Idlewild here are videos for a couple of my favourite tracks:
On WMVP this week my new HQ production methods start in earnest and the first video to get the sparkly new treatment is an excellent piece of human-stop-motion that I've already written a guest blog for $99 Dollar Music Videos about.
See you next week for another show, which hopefully won't be quite so long.
A little bit of experimentation with my recording techniques this week means that a few of the links I recorded don't have the best sound. Sorry about that, but I've now sorted out the issues so as of next week the audio will be much better.
In the European elections the BNP were voted for by just over 2% of the total electorate and they managed to win 2 seats. This is just wrong.
No matter whether it's local, national or european elections ALWAYS VOTE.
In 1997 Labour had 43% of the popular vote yet won 63% of the seats. In 2001 they had 41% and retained their 63% of the seats and in 2005 it was 37% with 55% of the seats. Proportianal Representation makes sense.
As the episode title says this week has one of the highest levels of video quality for many weeks. The Dutchess video is particularly stunning.
On the subject of high quality videos, I've altered the production process for WMVP, so this weeks episode will be slightly higher quality. The video itself is a great example of user-submitted input and was made for a very cool idea.
Anyone who listens to this show should also be watching Weekly Music Video Podcast. If you do, or have watched one of my 'Best Videos of the Year' podcasts in this feed, you know that cheap, inventive videos are my favourite type. That's why I am so pleased to endorse $99 Dollar Music Videos and be involved in whatever small way in the site. This podcast has one of those blindingly simple (if a little insane) concepts. You take a film-maker and a band, give them $99 and they make a video in 1 day. Despite the restrictions the videos that get produced are amazing. They also have a blog that features videos that they haven't produced themselves, but are 'In The Spirit' of their ethos. The first of my 'In The Spirit' guest blogs will be online Monday.
I actually mispoke in the podcast. It's not Oregon that has the dual civil-partnership/gay-marriage-banned situation, it's Washington State (I always get those two states in the Pacific Northwest mixed up). New Hampshire has the same situation.
As far as gay marriage goes Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont allow gay marriage and New Jersey allows civil partnerships with rights equal to marriage.
I hope the fact I will soon start to have ads on the show doesn't turn too many people off. I simply can't afford to keep my two shows going without the free hosting that the fine people at LibSyn provide and the only way I can keep the free hosting is to have the ads. I think it's a small price to pay.
Not much on the video front this week, but the Cradle video is a really nice piece of work.
Thanks to Grant Mason of Three From Leith for unwittingly providing this weeks episode title.
I
got pretty angry about the cycling race attack this week, but I feel
strongly about the need for closed-road cycle racing in mainland
Britain. These not-in-my-back-yard idiots are going to have to accept
that things are changing. The benefits of closed-road racing are
demonstrated by the success of Isle of Man riders. Mark Cavendish is
the fastest sprinter in the world, Jonny Bellis is a very promising
top-level rider and Peter Kennaugh is almost certainly going to go pro
next year with the Sky team. The ratio of IoM pro riders to pro riders
from the rest of Britain speaks for itself.
Make The Girl Dance - Baby Baby Baby
is one of the most amazing videos I have come across. Not because it's
particularly well shot or clever, more because I can't believe they did
it. Three models walking down a street in Paris on a Thursday afternoon
absolutely stark naked. (Watch for the transition between the second
and third girl. They mess up the timing a bit.) Matt & Kim
did a similar video recently, but personally I have doubts about its
authenticity. In the Make The Girls Dance video the bars to cover the
naughty bits spell out the lyrics to the song, which is quite clever
and reminiscent of this video by The BPA (AKA one of my heroes, Norman Cook).
I'm going to be appearing on The Random Three
podcast soon, probably this week. It's like a condensed Desert Island
Discs where you select three tracks that mean something to you. It's a
non-podsafe show, so I treat it as a guilty pleasure. If you're
interested in my musical influences then check it out.
Two
good examples of videos that use a basic concept of only having the
band perform, but do something interesting with it. Modern Caveman
start miming their instruments before there equipment comes in and The
Beauvilles line up before a cold war firing squad.
So here is the penultimate episode before the week-long celebrations for my hundredth episode. Starting next Saturday there will be one podcast a day, lasting around 20 minutes each, that delve into the genres of music that have been played in the first 2 years of this show. Some great stuff out of the archives that you might not have heard before.
In my usual rambling and unscripted way I might have buried my conclusions about the Atheism/Religion debate. Put succinctly my feelings are as follows:
1. I am against Evangelistic and Fundamentalist Christians, not Christians in general. 2.People like Pat Condell and Richard Dawkins have every right to reply to these Evangelists, especially since they started the war of words. 3. The Atheism that Condell, Dawkins et al promote is in itself a religious dogma, or more precisely an anti-religious dogma. 4. This Atheist dogma is not necessarily dignified or even helpful, but it may be possible that it is the only way to respond.
Further to these main points there's one thing that I didn't mention on the show, but is probably worth pointing out. The 'vocals' for the track in question that was played last week are anti-Bible not anti-Christian. There is a difference. As with all religions there is a question of interpretation and it's when people follow an absolutely literal interpretation that problems start.
Interesting video selection this week. The Super700 video is so close to being brilliant, but it ends up being rather predictable. When the vocals of the track talk about woods, suddenly the singer is in the woods. It's frustrating because there are some genuinely arresting images in the video, but the whole does not add up to the sum of the parts. There is also a good example of the differences between live videos on YouTube. Some, like the Atomic Tom video, have probably been shot on somebodies phone and the quality suffers; but some, like the Core Effect video, have been shot on proper equipment by somebody associated with the band and are pretty much broadcast quality. Whatever the quality if I can find a video of the full song on YouTube I will always give a link to it.
I realised late in the recording that I left you hanging about the popularity of The Totally Rad Show. It turns out that the two different formats that the show is released in are at 91 and 98 in the top 100 Entertainment video podcasts. You really needed to know that didn't you? If you're interested in seeing the episode that I appear in and was so controversial then it's episode 110.
Another delayed release this week. The internetz have been fine, but it's been one of those days when I just haven't been able to get on the computer at all.
Unconciously with Cycling races in Belgium, a track by an American band with a French title and a track by a French band I gave my French accent a real work out this week.
Remember to listen to AMPed this Monday for my latest hosting appearance on that show and The Totally Rad Show on Tuesday to see if the intro I recorded with Charlie the wobbly puppy was used.
I might even record some pieces for Made in the UK this weekend as well. If I do that will be 10 podcasts or pieces of podcasts recorded this week.
I really love the atmospheric video for the Here Come The Birds track. Very well shot and very artistic. I'm really hoping they let me play it on WMVP in the future.
On Weekly Music Video Podcastthis Wednesday you have three videos for the price of one. A trilogy of videos by the same band that tell a single story. Crazy stuff.
I REALLY hope there are no interruptions to the schedule next weekend. Hopefully I'll see you then.
Now I have access I can give a full rundown of where the bands are from. I'm not sure if this is important to anyone else, but I always like to give origins.
Lal Meri - Los Angeles, California (got that one wrong on the show) Loudest Boom Bah Yea - Austin, Texas Universal Poplab - Gothenburg, Sweden Swedish For Beginners - Kalmar, Sweden Captain And The Kings - Glasgow, Scotland (wrong again) We Were Promised Jetpacks - Glasgow, Scotland Zwish - Canberra, Australia 2-L8 - Greece ( I think Salonika, but I can't confirm)#
In my e-mail after a weekend away (510 spam messages!) I was informed that the piece I recorded for It's A Frog's Life ages ago was played on the last episode. If you are at all interested in acoustic music then it's a fantastic podcast to subscribe to.
This week is one of the finest selections of videos for many weeks, and not only because you get three for the price of one with Zwish.
A lot of great music this week and a lot of weird chat from the PodCrawl. Thanks to Rowley (Dark Compass), The Grumbler (Music & Mumblings), Pete (PC Podcast) and Gabor (Electrical Language) for contributing to the promos and also to Rowley for recording it all.
Perhaps one of the audio recordings needs a little explanation. Soho in London is one of the centres of the gay community in Britain. That's why we were bemoaning the fact that the 'gorgeous totty' probably wasn't playing for our team.
For those interested and in time, it seems that the PodCrawl will possibly be streaming video HERE. It looks like we'll be streaming sometime between 12pm and 4pm BST. If anyone is in the London area we'll be starting out at the Montague Pyke pub on Charing Cross Road.
Soon after I recorded the show I learnt that the Bears have also signed Orlando Pace. He's a sure-fire hall of fame Left Tackle and if he stays healthy that's another big boost to the Bears chances. That's a big if though. He hasn't played a full season for about three years.
As I said on the show the Stars And Sons video is fantastic. A bizarre, interesting journey into a fractured psyche with a little bit of the 'sea' theme that is so obvious from the track title.
Here's the whole sorry tale of Jade Goody. (Trusty, trusty Wikipedia). I only really object to the fact that this horrible woman was a part of our lives here in the UK for 7 years for no good reason. She didn't even win the series of Big Brother she was on.
At time of writing Great Britain has 7 total medals at the World Track Cycling Championships, equal top with Australia. We've still only got 1 Gold though. It says something that that is a little disappointing.
Did anyone get the impression that I quite like that Transit Studio track?
Well there wasn't a delay in releasing the show, but there has been a delay on posting these video links.
Since it's now so late I can tell you that Everton disappointingly lost 2-1 to Portsmouth and Mark Cavendish pipped Heinrich Haussler to the line at the Milan-San Remo. Rule Britannia!
I realised after I finished recording that I made a mistake in the show. The man who won Tirreno-Adriatico was Michele Scarponi not Leandro Scarponi. Leandro Scarponi is a footballer. Just shows how small the team is that I can't even remember his name. Of course nobody cares about this.
As I suspected, the Intercontinental Music Lab didn't play the track about LSD, but if you want to see the very entertaining concert the link is HERE.
Another delayed release, but at least it's coming out on Saturday this week.
Within the next few weeks I will probably have to move this site so expect lots of bells and whistles soon. You'll also probably have to re-subscribe, which is a pain in the arse for you and me.
Any podcasters out there let me know what hosting you use, because I need the cheapest possible decent hosting/website builder package. Current best offer is US$18 per month for 3GB storage and 125GB bandwidth per month.
Nice selection of videos this week. Brad Sucks has a fan submitted effort and the animated video from 2-L8 is very cool and a great example of cheap and effective video making.
Who'd have thought I would make it all the way to 2 years. Certainly not me. I've nearly made it to 100 episodes too.
Thanks to everyone who contributed and even those who didn't, but still got into the show. Sorry for the pestering and the haunting is now off.
Also apologies for the background noise as well. Since I recorded this show I have actually upgraded my computer so it hopefully won't be a problem in the future. Since I'm not all that technical I'm absurdly proud of myself that I managed to install a new motherboard and graphics card all by myself.
Since this is a special anthology show I'm not bothering to put together a video playlist. Frankly I can't be arsed and have better things to do.
On Wednesday the Weekly Music Video Podcast will feature a fantastic fan participation video and on Saturday regular service will be resumed with Episode #90.
So see you next time and remember it's promotion not piracy!
It's quite humbling that one of the artists I played thought enough about what I said about their music that he bothered to make a video of my words. Like I said on the show it's possibly the coolest thing that any artist has ever done that involves me. There are actually 2 versions of Goldi's video online. One that has a full version of my intro and one that has a slightly edited version of my intro followed by the video to the track.
It's interesting that scrolling along the bottom of the MSNBC interview with Goldi in that video it says that Floyd Landis had just won the Tour de France. Of course we now know that he didn't, the lying, cheating steroid freak. Fortunately in his big return in the Tour of California he was nowhere. Congratulations to Levi Leipheimer who has almost certainly won the tour. Trivia Corner: The decisive time trial in the Tour was held in Solvang, which is the main setting of the excellent film Sideways.
Since I haven't plugged it in a while, remember you can follow me on twitter @ourobouros54.
What this weeks video list lacks in quantity it more than makes up in quality. Only two videos, but they are both brilliant. Beangrowers go for a fantastic approach that makes a lip sync video out of hundreds of still photos and Bluejuice jump out of a plane in pursuit of their art.
The next episode of the audio podcast will be the second anniversary show. SEND ME YOUR SUBMISSIONS! On the VidCast this week we will have an excellent cell animated video. So see you next time and remember that fuckwit Rush Limbaugh.
Did you notice that I didn't mention Valentine's Day. Maybe it's only because I'm single, but it seems to me that if you need one day to make a special effort and be romantic, then you're in trouble. Bah Humbug!
The webcam I have going spare is a refurbished Microsoft Lifecam VX-6000. Make me an offer if you're interested or it's going back on ebay.
Not a bad selection of videos this week. Fall Back Plan do interesting things with what is basically a performance video and Nadine Loren goes for a haunting minimalist approach.
A surprisingly short episode from a cold and snowy Bath.
One thing I forgot to mention is the trouble I've been having this week with myspace. As you know I've just started a new podcast the Weekly Music Video Podcast (hint, hint). Myspace is the quickest way of getting in touch with the video directors to get permission to play videos on the show. The problem is that the new show has a blogspot URL and whenever I put the blogspot URL in the message it tripped the spam filter. I had to change my password about 5 times. It's a sorry state of affairs when having a website on a specific service is automatically treated as spam. Dear myspace, not everybody using a blogspot URL is a filthy spammer.
Almost a complete set of videos this week. Rachael Sage brings us a bizarre cabaret show and The Vanguard has a sweet, romantic video shot in a very interesting way.
Forgive the new podcast not showing up this week. I absolutely promise that this Wednesday (4th February) the Weekly Music Video Podcast will be available from wmvp.blogspot.com.
One thing I forgot to mention about Lazy Fat Stupid American. If you go to lazyfatstupidamerican.com for a limited time the track will be available for free download. I'm sure that if good ol' Rush has heard of Johanna Sigurdardottir (or even Iceland) he would definitely not approve.
Not bad videos this week. the Age of Sound video is an excellent rotoscoped video that I'm hoping the director lets me use in the new VidCast. CoolHunter have decided to make a video using martial arts and motorcycles. Barmy.
Sorry for the late release of this episode. Sometimes it's REALLY difficult to get access to the computer when I want to record.
If you liked my remix of Jen's track then you can visit her blog at Inside My Head and subscribe to her excellent podcast. The original version of the track I remixed was played on November 19th during NaPodPoMo.
Great news about Innerpartysystem getting some national TV exposure. Go and have a look at both videos. The original version that they couldn't get played and the new version that has been playing on MTV2 here in the UK recently.
What are you still doing here! You must immediately go and subscribe to my new Weekly Music Video Podcast! The debut episode will be released this Wednesday.
And you also really need to submit your favourite tracks to be played on my 2nd anniversary show coming up at the end of February.
Not a bad crop of videos this week. As well as this official video for 'Bombshell From Hell' there's also a really tacky one on YouTube featuring girls in their underwear pole dancing and posing on beds. I'm not going to link to it here, but you are welcome to go and find it if that's your kind of thing.
See you on Wednesday for the inaugural Weekly Music Video Podcast and back here on Saturday (hopefully) for another episode of this here podcast. So see you then and remember I have momentous news!
I'm finding myself with less to rant about recently. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not.
If you like the sound of They Sink Ships, then remember to vote for them to support Attack! Attack! on their upcoming tour. The site to vote is Here. There's also going to be another Attack! Attack! track coming up on the podcast in the next few weeks.
If you haven't got enough podcasts to subscribe to then go and check out the new podcast from Oz's finest Erk. He's started his own music show at erkfm.com.
I still need my listeners to submit their favourite track that has been played on the Ourobouros Podcast for my second anniversary show at the end of February. E-mail your suggestions to ourobouros.podcast@googlemail.com and if you have the ability to record your own intro for the track you want played then send that along as well.
As I said on the show, the main reason for playing a track by Effektor! again was finding the video for this track on YouTube. It's a very fine example of the stop-motion-using-people genre.
Could you tell I was under-prepared and very tired?
It's taking me a bit of time to truly get back into the groove of podcasting after taking a month off. It didn't help that when I should have been preparing I was doing a remix for Jen of Inside My Head, and while I use the same software to both remix and podcast, I use them in very different ways. It was a little weird switching methodology later in the day.
Don't forget, if you don't make a submission of your favourite track for my second anniversary show at the end of February I will hunt you down. I know where most of you live.
One thing I didn't mention when I was gushing over how much I love 'Vitriol' by Bluejuice is that the video is bloody fantastic. They dress up like The Polyphonic Spree, act like a cult and perform to a bemused audience in the middle of a Sydney shopping mall. Ammp's video is nice too.
So here is the second annual Ourobouros VidCast, featuring
my 10 favourite videos for tracks that have been played in 2008 on the show.
Below are some show notes explaining a little why these are the videos that
made the cut. My basic rules for a good video can be summed up as imagination,
entertainment, fitting the song and if it’s done on a tight budget so much the
better.
A mostly animated video directed by Robin from the band. He
guides his partner Yellow Thunder Woman through an animated version of hell
featuring well known people who represent the lyrics. A very cheeky, very funny
experience and you’ve got to love a video with a beer break.
I’ve broken my own rule about leaving out bands that have
split up for this one. Even though Elle s’appelle aren’t together any more I
couldn’t bring myself to leave this video out. It’s probably my favourite video
that’s been made in the last 3 years and I just had to include it. The band and
their friend Ste Lucas make a creative video involving objects that are round.
Fundamental proof that you don’t need a huge budget to make an entertaining video,
you just need imagination. Elle s’appelle RIP.
This is a perfect example of the video fitting the track.
The video sees Jona Bechtolt, AKA Yacht, dressed in a giant cardboard penny and
wandering the streets Portland, Oregon,
his hometown.
This is a video that wasn’t released when I played the track
on the podcast. In preparation for compiling this VidCast I trawled through my
playlists for the year and saw if any videos had been released in the meantime.
My efforts were rewarded when this fantastic animated effort came up. It takes
the staple technique of each element of the track having its own visual cue and
does something interesting with it. Once you work out what’s going on it’s an
entertaining video to watch and stands up to repeated viewing.
There’s only one thing to say about this video. Lego Porn!
Childhood toys turned into stop-motion players in a modern tragedy. This
twisted video was directed by Bryn, the bands bassist and one of his friends.
The time-intensive methodology really pays off to create a memorable, fun
video.
The great lost video has been found again! When I originally
played this track on the podcast I bemoaned the fact that YouTube had removed
the video because it violated their policy, but now the band has got their
hands on a copy and it’s available on their personal website. The story goes
that a fan used videos from a website called Beautiful Agony as imagery for the
track Austere and uploaded it to YouTube. YouTube’s problem is that Beautiful
Agony specialises in videos of the faces of people while they masturbate. It
kind of fits the band name. Even though in this video there is no nudity, not
even an exposed female breast, YouTube deemed this inappropriate. It’s certainly
a memorable viewing experience, a little arousing, a little uncomfortable and
very weird. Since this video was made the band has produced an ‘official’ video
that can be seen here. It’s a brilliant piece of work in its own right and
could well have made the playlist itself, but the unofficial video is almost
unique.
This is a very cool take on an old idea. Everyone must have
seen that Bob Dylan video where he has all the lyrics on cards and shows them
before dropping them. In this video instead of cards, the lyrics are printed on
baseball caps that are then worn by the band, the directors, various friends
and even a couple of dogs. It’s seems like it would have been a lot of fun to
film and becomes an interesting video.
This is a disturbing video examining our approach to fame
and celebrity. A couple of strange newsreaders that follow the American pattern
of overweight man and hot woman lip-sync the lyrics while dressing up in
bondage gear and admitting they’re lying. For a video that has a lot of
disturbing imagery possibly the most disturbing is a single trickle of blood
coming from the nose of the vapidly smiling hot woman.
This is a sexy video that fits the song perfectly. Martina,
the singer for Dragonette walks around kissing people and then taking over
their persona, a great idea that takes advantage of the bands personality. It’s
also cool that it was directed by a woman. It’s actually the second video with
a female influence because Lamo who co-directed The Black Ghosts’ video is also
a woman.
I waited a long time for this video. I got the track in
February, but the video wasn’t ready until October so I didn’t play it until
then. Boy was it worth the wait. It’s a strange journey around a typical
American suburban home with the inhabitants hypnotised by strange red strings
and seemingly incapable of anything else. It’s full of startling, strange
images that stick in the mind long after watching.
As ever it was very difficult to finalise a 10 track
playlist and honourable mentions go to:
I'm back with my first new podcast of the year. It's been nearly a month since I recorded a new show so it was kinda weird to get back in the saddle.
The loud buzzing you can hear in the background is my computer. It's on it's last legs and is getting increasingly noisy. There's not much I can do about it so we're just going to have to put up with it until it finally dies.
Another reminder that I've finally signed up to twitter, so you can follow me at twitter.com/ourobouros54 if you really want to.
And please, please, please send me your favourite tracks for the second anniversary show. Let me know your favourite track that I've played and if you can record your own intro for the track then that would be fantastic. Ideally I'd like tracks suggested that have been played in the last year (since the first anniversary special), but any track that has been played on the show can be suggested.
Remember that the VidCast featuring my 10 favourite videos for tracks that were played in 2008 will be released on Wednesday and there will be another 'regular' show next Saturday. So see you next time and remember, I hope you're all now headbanging like mental patients.

The second annual Review podcast is here featuring my 10
favourite tracks that have been played on the show in the last year.
To make the selection process easier I made myself some
rules to follow. Bands that were played on last years podcast or vidcast were
excluded, bands that were featured on this years vidcast were also excluded and
bands that have split up were excluded.
Even with these rules it was hard to pick a 10 track
playlist, so honourable mentions go to:
Acusis – Seaside
Backchat (Played Show #73)
Donora – Weekend Tongue (Played Show #68)
Little Fish – Am I Crazy? (Played Show #54)
Slovakia
(RIP) – Part Of The Factory (Played Show #48)
un:armed – Talk Talk (Played Show #37)
Since I recorded this show at the beginning of December the
schedule has changed slightly. The next episode in the feed will be a regular
show on Saturday and then the VidCast is released midweek next week.
And while I’m here I may as well announce that I have bitten
the bullet and signed up for twitter. You can find me and follow me at
